Tether's USDT Faces July 2028 Compliance Deadline or Risk US Exchange Removal

USAT-0.03%
According to the GENIUS Act signed into law in July 2025, Tether's USDT must secure a compliant regulatory route in the United States by July 18, 2028, or risk removal from American crypto exchanges. The legislation established a three-year transition period for payment stablecoins; after the deadline, US exchanges cannot offer noncompliant tokens unless issued by a permitted issuer or qualifying foreign provider. Tether, which relocated to El Salvador in 2025, could pursue compliance as a foreign issuer through Treasury Department approval and OCC registration, or continue operating through its separate product USAT, launched in January 2026 through a federally regulated bank. With USDT holding a $184 billion market capitalization, losing regulated US exchange access would significantly reduce its role in American trading, though international use would remain unaffected.
