32-Year-Old Indicted Over Crypto Attack in Nancy Following Waltio Data Breach

According to Le Parisien, a 32-year-old man from Vaujours has been indicted in Nancy over an alleged crypto-targeted attack in June. The suspect, who posed as a police officer alongside two accomplices, attempted to steal a €20,000 cryptocurrency portfolio from a couple after their personal data was exposed in a January breach at French crypto tax platform Waltio. He faces charges of attempted extortion with a weapon, attempted kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit a crime.

During the attack, the assailants accosted the couple outside their apartment and "brutally beat" them after the husband came to investigate. Witnesses described the attackers as armed with an Uzi submachine gun; police recovered plastic zip ties and a €5 euro note at the scene. The January Waltio breach compromised data for approximately 50,000 users, including email addresses and cryptocurrency balances, which attackers later used to target victims.
