U.S. Congress Proposes Rebuilding DOJ Crypto Crime Task Force to Combat Theft and Fraud

According to ChainCatcher, citing CryptoSlate, the U.S. Congress is pushing to rebuild the Department of Justice's Cryptocurrency Crime Task Force. A new bill introduced by Representatives Lance Gooden and Josh Gottheimer would establish a Federal Cryptocurrency Theft Task Force within the DOJ to coordinate investigations and prosecutions of cryptocurrency asset theft, hacking, and fraud. The task force will develop best practices for evidence collection, digital forensics, asset tracing, and victim coordination; provide technical assistance and training to state and local law enforcement; and facilitate international cross-border case cooperation. The bill explicitly excludes cryptocurrency markets and financial institutions from the task force's regulatory scope and does not alter existing regulatory frameworks or criminal law. According to FBI data, cryptocurrency-related complaints reached 181,565 in 2025, with reported losses exceeding $11 billion.
