SpaceX Rents Colossus 1 Data Center Capacity to Anthropic Due to Hardware and Latency Issues

According to Bloomberg, SpaceX is renting the full computing capacity of its Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee to Anthropic, citing technical challenges that have hindered AI model training. The facility, which mixes older-generation Nvidia Hopper and Blackwell chips with legacy accelerators, has experienced latency problems when connected to two other data center campuses over 10 miles away, compounded by outdated network infrastructure. Unlike Colossus 2 and Colossus 3, which use consistent Blackwell architecture, the hardware heterogeneity at Colossus 1 creates bottlenecks in distributed computing operations. By leasing the underutilized facility, SpaceX can monetize the infrastructure while reserving newer data centers for internal AI development, including Grok.
