SpaceX Leases Colossus 1 to Anthropic for $1.25B Monthly Through May 2029

According to Bloomberg, SpaceX has leased its Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, Tennessee, to Anthropic after hardware mismatches and latency issues disrupted the facility's use for internal AI workloads. Under the May agreement, Anthropic pays $1.25 billion per month for access to over 300 megawatts of compute capacity, totaling approximately $45 billion through May 2029. The lease followed SpaceX's discovery that Colossus 1's mixed hardware—combining older Nvidia Hopper and Blackwell chips—created performance bottlenecks when networked with other facilities over 10 miles away, whereas Colossus 2 and 3 used uniform Blackwell systems. SpaceX retains the option to reclaim capacity if internal AI demand increases.
