Safaricom Deploys AI to Track M-Pesa Payments Linked to $23B Illegal Wildlife Trade

According to a United for Wildlife announcement reported by Nation.africa, Safaricom has joined a coalition led by crypto analytics firms Chainalysis, TRM Labs, and payment processors PayPal and Luno to disrupt illegal wildlife trafficking. The Kenyan telecom giant will integrate AI into its anti-money laundering systems across M-Pesa, Africa's leading mobile money platform, to flag suspicious transactions from poaching and trafficking syndicates. The initiative aims to sever financial networks supporting the $23 billion annual illegal wildlife trade, which puts an estimated one million plant and animal species at risk of extinction. Tech giants Google, Meta, TikTok, and Alibaba are simultaneously removing wildlife listings from their platforms using AI detection systems. British Airways and Heathrow Airport will launch public awareness campaigns to help travelers identify and report suspected wildlife products.
