IEA Warns U.S.-Iran Escalation Threatens 2027 Oil Market Surplus Outlook

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the escalation of U.S.-Iran hostilities on July 7-8 may upend its forecast for significant oil supply surplus in 2027. The IEA stated that recent hostile actions could reverse market expectations of oversupply next year, which depend on improved transit through the Strait of Hormuz. In June, following a ceasefire agreement that reopened the strait, global oil supply increased by 4.1 million barrels per day, though still 9.4 million barrels per day below pre-conflict levels. The IEA projects supply will grow by 7.5 million barrels per day in 2027, contingent on continued stability in the critical waterway.
