China Launches First Photonic Computing Lab on June 10 at Shanghai Jiao Tong University

According to South China Morning Post, China launched the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Integrated Photonic Computing Chips and Systems on June 10 at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, marking the country's first industry-academia platform dedicated to photonic computing. The lab will focus on chip architectures, silicon photonics integration, optical components, and algorithms to advance the technology. Lab director Zou Weiwen noted that photonic computing could offer advantages in bandwidth, latency, and energy efficiency, though significant scientific challenges remain before achieving theoretical performance.
