Found this interesting breakdown of the cheapest and safest places to live in the US and some of the numbers are pretty wild. Apparently there are at least 15 cities where you can actually get both affordable housing and low crime rates - which honestly feels rare these days.
What caught my attention first is how many of these are in Ohio. Seven cities from one state made the top 15 list. New Philadelphia leads with annual living costs around $35,500 and a violent crime rate of just 0.69 per 1,000 people. The average home there goes for about $186k with monthly mortgage around $1,100.
If you're looking at the cheapest options overall, San Elizario, Texas is wild - homes averaging $167k and only $989 monthly mortgage. New Ulm, Minnesota is another solid pick with even lower violent crime (0.29 per 1,000) though costs creep up to about $36,400 annually.
The data shows most of these affordable and safe towns have populations under 50k, except for Columbus, Indiana and a few others. Violent crime rates across the board are impressively low - we're talking under 1 per 1,000 in most cases. Property crime varies more, but still manageable compared to bigger cities.
If you're seriously considering relocating to somewhere more affordable without sacrificing safety, these safest and most affordable places to live in the US are worth researching. The analysis pulled from FBI crime stats and Census data, so it's pretty solid sourcing. Definitely beats paying premium prices in major metros if you can swing remote work or find local opportunities.
