Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update my banking details with SASSA, and honestly, it's more complicated than it should be. The process depends on which grant you're on, so let me break it down.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you basically have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office—no shortcuts. You'll need to fill out a Payment Method Change Form, bring your ID and proof of your new bank account (bank statement from the last three months or an official letter). They'll verify everything and send it to the bank, which takes about three weeks. The trick is getting it done before the 15th of the month if you want it to work for next month's payment.
Now, if you're on the SRD grant (that R370 relief), it's way easier because it's all online. You go to the SASSA SRD website, enter your ID number, and they send you a link via SMS. Click it, enter your new account details, and you're done. Just make sure the account is in your name—SASSA won't touch joint or third-party accounts.
Changing your phone number is just as important, especially for the SRD grant since they use SMS for verification. You can do it through their online portal if you have your application ID, or just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11. They'll send you an OTP to confirm the change. One heads-up though—there are fake SASSA websites out there trying to scam people, so always use the official link. If the online stuff isn't working, just visit your local SASSA office or email them directly. Takes longer, but it's more reliable.
