Just updated my SASSA details and realized how many people don't know the proper way to do this. If you're getting permanent grants like old age or disability, here's what you actually need to do when you want to check your banking details or make changes.

First thing - you can't just do it online for permanent grants. You've got to visit your nearest SASSA office in person. Bring your original SA ID and a copy, plus proof of your new bank account (a stamped bank statement from the last three months works, or a letter from the bank). They'll give you a form to fill out, and SASSA sends everything to the bank for verification, which takes up to 21 working days. Pro tip: if you need the change for next month's payment, submit before the 15th of the current month or you'll have to wait another cycle.

For your phone number updates, you can try calling the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office, but honestly, going in person is usually faster if you want to get everything sorted at once.

Now, if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's completely different - that's all online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, and you can update your banking details right there. Same rule though: the account has to be in your name only, no joint accounts.

The key thing is knowing which grant you're on before you try to check your banking details or make changes. Permanent grants mean the office, SRD means the online portal. Don't waste time trying the wrong method.
