Just realized a lot of people struggle with updating their SASSA grant details, especially when it comes to changing bank details for the R350 SRD grant or permanent grants. Let me break down what actually works because the process is different depending on which grant you're on.
If you're getting the SRD R370 grant, honestly it's way easier - everything is done online through the official SASSA portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you update your bank account details right there. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for the bank to verify, but it's straightforward. The key thing is the account has to be in your name exactly as it appears on your ID - no joint accounts or third-party stuff.
Now, if you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability, it's more complicated. You actually have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office - can't do it online. You'll need to fill out a Payment Method Change Form and bring your original ID plus proof of your new bank account (a recent bank statement or letter from the bank works). They send it for verification, which can take up to 21 working days. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect the next month, otherwise you're waiting another cycle.
For changing your cellphone number on SRD, use their contact details portal - you'll need your ID and Application ID. They'll send you an OTP to verify the new number. If the online thing doesn't work, just call the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 or email them. Way less frustrating than dealing with it in person if you can help it.
The main thing people mess up is using accounts that aren't solely in their name or submitting documents that are too old. Keep everything current and you'll avoid payment delays.
