Smart Electric Vehicles Require Double the Materials of Gasoline Cars, China Auto Engineers Say

According to Hou Fushen, vice chairman and secretary-general of China Society of Automotive Engineers, speaking today at the 2026 Auto New Materials Conference, smart electric vehicles now require approximately 400 types of materials—double the roughly 200 types needed for traditional gasoline vehicles. The society projects that by 2030, new energy vehicle penetration in China's passenger car market will exceed 70%, with L2 autonomous driving features becoming standard across the industry and L3/L4 advanced autonomous driving adoption reaching above 35%.
