Semiconductor Import Prices Rise 3.6% in May as AI Demand Outpaces Moore's Law Cost Reductions

CHIP-6.75%
According to SemiAnalysis on June 23, semiconductor and computer import prices rose 3.6% month-over-month and 14.4% year-over-year in May, driven by AI demand outpacing cost reductions from Moore's Law. Between 2001 and 2020, Moore's Law had driven semiconductor import prices down 52%. The latest surge reflects a fundamental shift: after adjusting for chip speed and capacity improvements, market prices for computing power per unit are now rising despite technological advances, indicating a genuine chipset shortage pushing up underlying prices before tariffs.
