According to Odaily, OpenAI announced the acquisition of cloud execution platform Ona to enhance long-term autonomous capabilities for AI agents within its rapidly expanding Codex ecosystem. The company did not disclose the acquisition amount. Ona's secure cloud execution and task orchestration technologies will be integrated to enable Codex agents to run continuously across extended tasks spanning hours or days—not just single sessions.
Codex now has over 5 million weekly active users, representing 400% growth since earlier this year. Following the acquisition, Codex agents will continue running even after users close their devices, allowing remote progress monitoring, real-time instruction updates, and result review. OpenAI plans to evolve Codex from a single-device, single-session tool into an enterprise-grade platform for long-running AI agents in production environments.
