Mathematician Zhiming Tao Warns Mathematics Faces Proof Abundance Crisis as AI Solves 7 of 10 Research Problems

According to mathematician Zhiming Tao at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), mathematics is entering a fundamental crisis regarding research methods and values, as AI systems can now solve research-level mathematical problems at a cost of $10 to $1,000 per problem. In testing by First Proof, AI systems solved 7 of 10 new research problems to publishable quality, shifting mathematics from "proof scarcity" to "proof abundance." Tao emphasized that the critical skill will no longer be solving problems first, but instead judging result importance, clearly explaining proofs, and transforming them into shared human understanding.
