Coinbase Assists in Prosecution of Brooklyn Man Charged with $16M Impersonation Fraud Targeting 100 Users

According to Coinbase and the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, Coinbase is assisting in the prosecution of a Brooklyn man charged with impersonating customer service representatives to defraud approximately 100 users of nearly $16 million. The suspect allegedly used social engineering tactics to convince users their accounts had been compromised, then directed them to transfer funds to "secure wallets" before stealing the money. To date, over $600,000 has been recovered. Coinbase noted the scheme did not stem from platform vulnerabilities but rather exploited user trust and urgency through deception such as spoofed identities and account risk alerts. The company stated it has worked with law enforcement to identify suspects, notify victims, provide data, and trace blockchain transactions, highlighting how blockchain's traceability aids authorities in tracking fund flows.
