China Cracks Down on AI-Generated Online Rumors; 170+ Cases Investigated in First Half of 2026

According to the Ministry of Public Security on July 24, Chinese police investigated over 170 cases involving AI-generated online rumors in the first half of 2026, resulting in the detention of more than 190 people. The cases are part of a broader crackdown on new-type AI-related crimes, which also include identity fraud, system breaches, and financial theft using artificial intelligence.
