Brazil's Prosecutor's Office Reaffirms Ban on Crypto Political Donations on Monday

According to Brazil's Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF), on Monday the office reaffirmed a ban on cryptocurrency political donations ahead of the country's presidential election. The prohibition, established by the Superior Electoral Court in December 2019, restricts candidates and political parties from receiving donations in virtual currency due to the difficulty in verifying fund origins given the pseudonymous nature of crypto transactions. Instead, all campaign donations must be made through bank transfers or Pix (Brazil's instant payment system), with donor identification required. Digital crowdfunding is permitted starting May 15th of each election year, provided all donors are identified. Candidates failing to disclose donations or prove their origin may face fines and accountability charges.
