Bitcoin Rodney Pleads Guilty in $1.8 Billion HyperFund Scam on June 17

According to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, Miami crypto promoter Rodney "Bitcoin Rodney" Burton pleaded guilty on June 17 to conspiracy charges tied to HyperFund, a cryptocurrency scheme that defrauded investors worldwide of $1.8 billion. Burton, 56, admitted to operating unlicensed money transmitting services that promoted HyperFund between June 2020 and January 2022. He personally collected at least $7.85 million in proceeds from the operation. HyperFund falsely promised investors daily returns of 0.5 to 1 percent through non-existent crypto-mining operations before blocking withdrawals in 2021. Burton faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison.
