According to Amazon, the company submitted an application to the FCC on July 27 to deploy 5,000+ satellites for mobile communications services by 2028. The satellite constellation will provide voice calls, text messaging, data services, and emergency communications to areas without traditional network coverage.
Amazon will leverage radio spectrum resources acquired through its $11.6 billion acquisition of Globalstar earlier this year. This marks Amazon's first entry into satellite mobile communications, positioning it to compete with SpaceX's Starlink, which currently covers over 150 countries.
