200 Silicon Valley Startups Oppose U.S. Ban on Chinese AI Models, White House Divided on Policy

According to Politico, approximately 200 Silicon Valley startups submitted a joint letter to President Trump on July 22, urging the White House not to block access to Chinese open-weight artificial intelligence models, warning the ban would be catastrophic for the next generation of U.S. startup ecosystems.

The initiative, led by the newly formed Little Tech Association, noted that Chinese AI models have become vital for many American developers and offer superior performance at significantly lower costs than closed-source alternatives from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI. Within the Trump administration, however, opinion remains sharply divided. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and the Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios have taken a hard-line stance, accusing Chinese AI companies of intellectual property theft, while Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has expressed concerns about restricting technology access for startups. Trump has not publicly taken a position on the dispute, leaving policy direction uncertain.
