What Is Ethena?

Ethena is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol built on Ethereum. Its goal is to create a crypto-native US dollar that operates independently of traditional banking reserves. The core product, USDe, is not backed by fiat deposits. Instead, it maintains a 1:1 peg to the US dollar through crypto asset collateralization and a hedging mechanism in the derivatives market.

Unlike most stablecoins, Ethena’s design functions more like an on-chain synthetic dollar. The system uses assets such as ETH and stETH as collateral, while simultaneously opening equivalent short futures positions in the derivatives market to establish a delta-neutral structure. This approach manages price volatility and captures funding rate and interest differentials. The operating logic is similar to a blockchain-based bond in the crypto ecosystem.

Core Uses and Role of USDe

As the core asset of the Ethena ecosystem, USDe serves two primary functions in the crypto market.

  1. USDe acts as a USD stablecoin, providing investors with a relatively stable unit of value in the highly volatile crypto market. It is suitable for trading, capital parking, and asset allocation.
  2. USDe also offers yield potential. Users can stake USDe and convert it to sUSDe to participate in protocol yield distribution. This yield is mainly sourced from three areas: delta hedging strategies in the derivatives market, stablecoin-related operations, and interest generated from underlying ETH or liquid staking assets.

The yield from sUSDe is variable, fluctuating with market funding rates, hedging costs, and the overall risk environment.

Decentralized Design and CeDeFi Trade-Offs

USDe is minted and managed on-chain via smart contracts, without dependence on traditional bank accounts or fiat reserves. This structural distinction sets it apart from centralized stablecoins such as USDT and USDC.

In practice, Ethena is not fully decentralized. To facilitate hedging and arbitrage, the protocol relies on centralized exchanges for derivatives liquidity. Some reserve and operational processes also involve centralized stablecoins like USDT and USDC. This results in a typical CeDeFi hybrid architecture: Ethena employs DeFi models for protocol logic and asset issuance, while leveraging CeFi’s depth and efficiency for liquidity and risk management.

ENA: Ethena’s Governance Center

ENA is the native governance token of the Ethena protocol. Its main function is not payment or yield, but empowering holders to participate in decision-making. Through ENA, the community can vote on protocol upgrades, risk parameter adjustments, treasury management, and security strategies. This governance framework enables Ethena’s development direction to be collectively determined by token holders rather than a single team. ENA’s governance role ensures that USDe is not just a financial product, but also a currency experiment shaped by its community.

Summary

By integrating crypto asset collateralization, delta-neutral hedging, and centralized liquidity, Ethena has developed a stablecoin architecture distinct from traditional fiat-backed models. USDe functions as a stable value unit in the market and, through staking mechanisms, allows users to participate in yield distribution for greater asset flexibility. Backed by the ENA governance system, Ethena aims to balance the ideals of decentralization with real-world financial efficiency. This hybrid DeFi and CeFi stablecoin model is charting a new course for the crypto market and stands as a key example in the ongoing evolution of stablecoins.

Aster vs Hyperliquid: Which Perp DEX Will Prevail?

Aster and Hyperliquid are the two representative protocols of the "purpose-built L1 path" within the current decentralized perpetual exchange (Perp DEX) sector. As a pioneer in the field, Hyperliquid has built a deep liquidity moat through its highly mature order book architecture and strong community consensus. Conversely, Aster, as a rising challenger, seeks to leapfrog the competition in high-performance trading through more aggressive multi-chain aggregation logic, private transaction modules, and an underlying execution environment optimized for 2026 market demands.

AI-Native Settlement Layers: How United Stables Is Building the Next Financial Rail

Stablecoins were originally designed as dollar substitutes within exchanges, primarily used for asset pricing and trade settlement. As on-chain financial ecosystems have matured, their role has expanded beyond simple payments to include collateral assets, cross-chain liquidity mediums, and unified settlement units. In particular, as AI systems and automated agents begin to participate directly in economic activity, demand has risen sharply for programmable value units capable of instant settlement. This shift is pushing stablecoins toward the role of foundational financial infrastructure.

Aerodrome Tokenomics: How ve(3,3) Powers Base's Most Profitable DEX

AERO is the native token of Aerodrome Finance, a core decentralized exchange and liquidity protocol in the Base ecosystem. It is primarily used for liquidity incentives and ecosystem operations. veAERO is a governance NFT that users receive by locking AERO, representing both voting power and the right to share protocol revenue. Through a dual track structure of AERO as a utility token and veAERO as a governance credential, Aerodrome separates liquidity usage value from long term governance power, allowing participants to act as liquidity providers, governance decision makers, and revenue sharers within the same system.
