Vanguard: U.S. 401(k) Hardship Withdrawals Hit Record 6% in 2025, Up From 5%

According to Vanguard Group's annual report released in 2025, hardship withdrawals among the 5 million participants in its managed 401(k) plans reached a record 6%, up from 5% the previous year. About two-thirds of the withdrawn funds were used to avoid home foreclosure or eviction (36%) or to cover medical expenses (31%).
