USD/JPY Hits 163.161 Yen on July 22, Highest Level in Nearly 40 Years

According to Yonhap Infomax, on July 22 (Tokyo time), the USD/JPY exchange rate touched 163.161 yen at 2:07 PM, approaching its highest level in approximately 39 years and 7 months since December 1986. The New York foreign exchange market earlier saw USD/JPY reach 163.24 yen. Dollar buying pressure stemmed from escalating U.S.-Iran tensions and rising oil prices. WTI crude futures climbed to $85 per barrel in Asian trading following Houthi threats to Red Sea shipping. President Donald Trump rejected negotiations with Iran on July 21, warning of imminent strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Japanese authorities signaled caution, with Finance Minister Katayama Satsuki reiterating willingness to intervene if necessary, temporarily limiting volatility.
