U.S. Housing Starts Fall 15.4% in May to 1.18M Units, Down 8.9% Year-over-Year

According to Commerce Department data released Tuesday, U.S. housing starts fell 15.4% in May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.18 million units, significantly worse than economist forecasts of 1.43 million. The decline marks an 8.9% decrease compared to May 2025. Building permits for future homebuilding also fell 0.7% to 1.413 million. Spot gold traded near $4,349.40 per ounce, up approximately 1% on the day, as the precious metal continued to attract safe-haven interest amid the housing sector slowdown.
