U.S. House Committee Holds Hearing on CFTC Authority Over Sports Betting Prediction Markets on July 22

According to The Block, the U.S. House Agriculture Committee's digital assets subcommittee held a hearing on Tuesday (July 22) to assess whether current laws and CFTC resources are sufficient to regulate the rapidly expanding sports betting prediction market sector. The committee discussed CFTC's proposed 2027 budget of $410 million (a 12.3% increase) and workforce of approximately 550 employees, which is significantly smaller than the SEC's $1.9 billion budget and 4,000+ staff. Committee Chairman Glenn Thompson indicated lawmakers will evaluate potential regulatory gaps and consider legislation. Representative Dusty Johnson stated that derivative products have evolved substantially and current laws need to address previously unforeseen issues, calling for Congress to act alongside ongoing court and agency proceedings.
