UK PM Burnham Rules Out Stamp Duty Changes in Autumn Budget

On Monday, UK Prime Minister Andrew Burnham ruled out any adjustments to residential stamp duty in the government's autumn budget, directly contradicting earlier media reports. When asked if he could assure homebuyers that stamp duty would not be "changed or abolished" in the next budget, Burnham stated: "Yes, I can say very clearly—this will not happen. We are not putting forward plans of this scale." The i newspaper had reported last weekend that the government was considering a comprehensive overhaul of stamp duty and council tax, potentially replacing them with an annual tax based on property value or a land-value-based system.
