Trump Orders Federal Agencies to Shift to Quantum-Resistant Encryption by Dec. 31, 2030

According to a White House executive order issued on June 22, President Donald Trump ordered federal agencies to migrate high-value and high-impact systems to post-quantum cryptographic standards, with deadlines of Dec. 31, 2030, for key establishment and Dec. 31, 2031, for digital signatures.

Agency heads must designate a post-quantum cryptography migration lead within 30 days, while the Office of Management and Budget will issue implementation guidance within 90 days in coordination with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cyber Director. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) must begin a pilot migration project within 180 days, with completion required by Dec. 31, 2027. Federal procurement rules will also require covered contractors to meet NIST post-quantum standards by Dec. 31, 2030.
