Trump Administration Rejects USMCA Extension, Triggers 10-Year Countdown on Wednesday

According to Hasnain Malik, geopolitical risk and emerging markets equity strategist at Tellimer, the Trump administration rejected extending the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA) on Wednesday, triggering a 10-year countdown before the deal expires. Malik stated the move is negative for Mexico, increasing uncertainty over foreign direct investment returns in manufacturing. However, he noted that the rejection "is far less destructive than what could have happened," with the worst-case scenario of a complete USMCA breakdown being avoided.
