Swedish Court Orders Google to Pay PriceRunner $1.9 Billion in Antitrust Damages

A Swedish court has ordered Alphabet's Google to pay approximately $1.9 billion in damages to PriceRunner, the price comparison service owned by Klarna, after finding that Google illegally favored its own shopping service in search results. The Patent and Market Court in Stockholm awarded 14.3 billion Swedish crowns (about $1.5 billion) in damages, with interest bringing the total to roughly $1.97 billion. The court found that PriceRunner suffered sustained commercial harm due to Google's unlawful preferencing of its comparison-shopping service over rivals since 2008.

The ruling builds on a 2017 European Commission decision fining Google €2.42 billion for the same conduct; that decision was upheld on appeal in 2024. PriceRunner sued Google in 2022 seeking compensation for lost profits across Britain, Sweden, and Denmark. Google rejected the verdict and indicated it may appeal, which could delay any payment for more than a year.
