South Korea's KOSPI Sidecar Breaker Triggered 40 Times in 2026, Far Exceeding 2008 Financial Crisis Year

According to South Korean financial investment industry data, the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) sidecar breaker mechanism has been triggered 40 times as of July 22, 2026, with 20 instances each on the buy and sell sides. This far exceeds the 26 times it was triggered throughout 2008 during the global financial crisis, when buy-side triggers occurred 14 times and sell-side 12 times. The surge is attributed to expanded use of algorithmic automated orders and mechanical rebalancing trades by exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which has altered market supply-demand dynamics.
