South Korea's KOSPI Retail Investor Deposits Dry Up by 34 Trillion Won in Two Months as Index Falls from 9,000 to 6,000

According to Korea's Financial Investment Association, retail investor deposits at securities firms dropped 34 trillion won in two months, from 139 trillion won in early June to 105.6 trillion won on July 24, as the KOSPI index plummeted from 9,000 to 6,000 points on July 28. The decline reflects widespread margin calls and deleveraging among retail traders who had been absorbing selling pressure from institutional and foreign investors. Securities analysts said foreign investors, who have reduced their net selling pace in early July, are now viewed as the key catalyst for a potential market rebound, as retail buying power continues to exhaust.
