South Korea's KOSPI Plunges from 9,114 to 5,663 in 23 Trading Days, Down 40%

According to Maeil Business Newspaper, South Korea's KOSPI index crashed from a record high of 9,114.55 to 5,663 in just 23 trading days, marking a 40% decline and reversing its position from the world's best-performing index year-to-date to the worst performer. The sharp selloff was driven by foreign investors locking in profits, delayed pension rebalancing by Korea's National Pension Service, and margin call-driven liquidations by retail investors. Credit trading balances surged from approximately 30 trillion won in late January to 38.6 trillion won as of July 24, exacerbating volatility as individual investors concentrated bets in semiconductor stocks rather than diversifying.
