South Korea's Choline Drug Market Faces Collapse After 26 Years; Clinical Trial Flops

According to Seoul Kyungje, pharmaceutical companies submitted clinical trial results for choline preparations targeting mild cognitive impairment last month; the primary evaluation metrics were not met. The results indicate no significant difference in cognitive function maintenance or improvement between patients taking choline and control groups. If South Korean regulators ultimately approve indication deletion, the health insurance authority will initiate large-scale reimbursement clawback procedures. According to Ubiist, the choline market maintained annual sales of 500–600 billion won in recent years, with projections showing potential reimbursement clawback exceeding 500 billion won (calculated as 20% of cumulative prescription amounts from June 2021 onward). Pharmaceutical companies including Daewoo Bio and Chongkundang have already recognized estimated liabilities of approximately 100 billion won each in their financial statements to account for potential reimbursement obligations.
