SC Ventures, the strategic investment arm of Standard Chartered Bank, invests in crypto market makers, GSR.

Standard Chartered Bank’s risk investment arm, SC Ventures, announced the completion of a strategic investment in cryptocurrency market maker GSR, becoming the company’s first external shareholder since its establishment ten years ago. The investment aims to deepen collaboration between the two sides in tokenized assets and institutional-grade digital asset infrastructure, strengthening liquidity in financial markets.

Standard Chartered Bank invests in crypto market maker GSR, deploys digital asset liquidity markets

SC Ventures’ investment in GSR symbolizes Standard Chartered’s strategic move to integrate tokenized asset management with crypto market makers. Since GSR was founded in 2013, it has long maintained independent operations; this time, introducing SC Ventures as its first external strategic shareholder reflects that the crypto market is accelerating toward institutionalization. GSR CEO Song Xin (phonetic transliteration) said the digital asset market is maturing, and by combining the bank’s brand advantages, starting with asset tokenization as a key entry point, it could become a future leader. The two parties have not yet disclosed the specific investment amount, but the move shows that Standard Chartered is trying to secure an important position within digital asset market liquidity.

Tokenization platform Libeara plays a key cooperation role

This equity investment is a further extension of the partnership between the two sides. Previously, GSR had participated in investing in Libeara, an asset tokenization platform supported by SC Ventures. Libeara provides a technical route for institutional clients to convert real-world assets into digital tokens, which aligns with GSR’s goal of expanding its business in the crypto capital markets. Through Libeara, GSR’s clients can enter the tokenized asset market more effectively. Standard Chartered Bank and GSR share aligned objectives: they plan to jointly build a regulatory-compliant and scalable infrastructure, and Libeara serves as an important bridge connecting traditional financial assets with blockchain technology.

GSR expands end-to-end token lifecycle services

GSR is not only limited to its traditional role as a market maker—it is currently transforming into a full-spectrum token finance services provider. Earlier this year, GSR significantly expanded its token lifecycle management capabilities by acquiring Autonomous and Architech. Its service scope now covers strategic planning before token issuance, market-making activities after issuance, and various capital markets supporting services. In addition, GSR has recently also ventured into the exchange-traded fund (ETF) space, launching its first actively managed multi-asset crypto fund with staking-enabled features (GSR Crypto Core3 ETF). This vertically integrated strategy helps it maintain a leading position in the fiercely competitive crypto financial infrastructure sector.

Standard Chartered’s strategic deployment in the digital asset space

Standard Chartered continues to demonstrate a high level of involvement in the crypto industry. In addition to SC Ventures investing in GSR and the asset manager Keyrock, it also has a digital asset custody and trading firm, Zodia. Market analysis indicates that Standard Chartered is gradually building a complete ecosystem covering custody, trading, market making, and tokenization. SC Ventures CEO Alex Manson emphasized that the next phase of growth for digital assets depends on the structure of infrastructure. SC Ventures plans to launch a digital asset fund with a scale of $250 million this year, further strengthening its influence in institutional-grade crypto financial services.
