During the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 5, Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's invitation for face-to-face talks, stating there is currently no necessity for such a meeting and reaffirming that Russia will not cease military operations until achieving its strategic objectives.
This response came after Zelensky issued an open letter the previous day proposing direct talks with Putin to find ways to end the war, now in its fifth year. Zelensky argued that Russian citizens were fatigued by the conflict, high inflation, and fuel shortages, suggesting Russian society was ready for peace. In his response, Putin criticized parts of Zelensky's letter as offensive and questioned the Ukrainian leader's genuine commitment to negotiations, saying "Let experts work first and propose concrete solutions, then we will meet." Zelensky later countered, stating Putin's response proved the Kremlin has no intention of ending the war.
