OpenAI Receives Subpoena From Multiple U.S. States, Weeks Before IPO Filing

According to The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI received a subpoena from multiple state attorneys general on Friday (June 12), requiring the company to submit documents covering advertising practices, user data handling, content involving minors and elderly users, and AI model behavior. The subpoena was issued by the New York State Attorney General's office on behalf of a coalition of state prosecutors.

OpenAI has already filed confidentially with the SEC for a public offering this month. The company responded that it takes the attorneys general's concerns seriously and will cooperate constructively. The investigation reflects growing legal scrutiny of AI companies across U.S. states.
