OpenAI Product Lead Reveals DeepMind Shelved Two-Year LLM Technology Before ChatGPT Launch

According to a Wired interview monitored by Beating, Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI's core product lead, disclosed that Google DeepMind had developed and shelved a large language model technology for approximately two years before ChatGPT's debut in late 2022. Sottiaux stated that conservative leadership and bureaucratic delays prevented DeepMind from releasing the technology. He said he decided to join OpenAI in San Francisco after realizing DeepMind was "sitting on" the LLM technology without taking action. Sottiaux, who previously worked on AlphaGo's research infrastructure at Google and DeepMind, now leads major updates to ChatGPT and oversees the integration with Codex agent sandbox, reporting directly to Greg Brockman.
