OpenAI Officially Launches Robotics Project, Aims for Personal Robot for Everyone

According to Sam Altman's post on X, OpenAI Robotics is officially launching with plans to hire full-stack hardware, operations, systems, and machine learning engineers. The short-term goal is to build robots that assist technical workers in infrastructure development, while the long-term vision is to provide every person with a personal robot capable of performing any task.

The project evolved from OpenAI's world simulation research led by Aditya Ramesh over the past year, with hardware and algorithms designed in tandem from the start. In a Big Technology Podcast interview, OpenAI President Greg Brockman explained the shift: the world model from Sora and GPT reasoning represent different branches of the technology tree, making parallel advancement difficult with limited compute. Consequently, OpenAI discontinued Sora's consumer application to concentrate resources on robotics development.
