According to Financial Times, over a dozen current and former OpenAI staff members said ChatGPT is undergoing its largest product overhaul since launch, shifting from a chat interface to an integrated platform combining coding tools, image generation, and external services like Canva and Booking.com. The rollout will begin in coming weeks via website and mobile app updates. An internal memo from senior staff described the strategic shift as "Chat is dead," signaling the company's pivot toward AI agents capable of executing tasks—from booking travel to managing calendars—rather than question-answer interactions. The biggest beneficiary is Codex, OpenAI's coding product, which has grown six-fold in weekly active users to 5 million since launching a desktop version in February 2026, with most users on paid plans.
