According to multiple U.K. reports, Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK and a member of Parliament, is facing a formal investigation by the parliamentary standards watchdog over an undisclosed £5 million ($6.8 million) gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne. The donation was received weeks before Farage announced his candidacy in the 2024 general election. Harborne, a Thailand-based businessman with a reported 12% stake in Tether, is one of the largest financial backers linked to Reform UK.
Parliamentary rules require newly elected MPs to disclose financial interests received within 12 months. Farage argues the funds were intended for personal security expenses and qualified as a private gift exempt from disclosure. However, Labour and other parties dispute this interpretation. The parliamentary commissioner for standards has begun investigating potential breaches under parliamentary conduct rules, with potential penalties including suspension from Parliament.
