NBA Finals Generate 15B Social Media Views as Young Fans Shift to Short-Form Content

According to NBA data, the five-game Finals series between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs generated 15 billion views on social media platforms, the most ever for an NBA Finals series and nearly triple the previous record set in 2025. Game 5 alone generated over 4 billion views, breaking the record set by Game 4 three days prior. The Finals attracted an average of 20.6 million viewers per game on ABC and ESPN networks.

The viewership surge reflects a broader shift in sports consumption, particularly among younger audiences. According to S&P Global's 2025 sports viewing report, 68 percent of sports viewers watched live games on TV or streaming, while 38 percent watched highlights and clips on social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube. Industry executives and rights holders are adapting accordingly, with FIFA expanding TikTok content during the ongoing World Cup tournament and the NBA inviting digital creators to All-Star weekend.
