Malaysia Bans Under-16 Users from Social Media, Effective June 1

According to Malaysia's Communications and Multimedia Commission, the country effective June 1 implemented two cybersecurity guidelines requiring social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube to enforce age verification and prohibit users under 16 from registering. The rules apply to platforms with at least 8 million Malaysian users. Platforms failing to comply may face penalties, with Australia's similar enforcement last December setting precedent by imposing fines up to 49.5 million Australian dollars.
