Kraken Launches Cash-Settled Bitcoin and Ether Options on Kraken Pro

Kraken launched cash-settled bitcoin and ether options through Kraken Pro on Thursday, introducing a new derivatives product as crypto exchanges and traditional financial firms compete for institutional trading flows. The European-style, USD-settled options are initially available through request-for-quote trading to eligible international clients outside Europe, North America, and Australia, with Europe expansion planned at a later date. The launch places Kraken deeper into a derivatives market where futures and perpetual contracts dominate crypto trading volumes, while options remain a smaller segment controlled by a limited group of major venues.

Kraken Targets Simplified USD Settlement for Crypto Options

Kraken is positioning the product as an effort to expand the addressable market by lowering operational barriers. Alexia Theodorou, Kraken's director of derivatives, said the existing options market in crypto has been built for a narrow slice of the trader base. "Our offering broadens access through a straightforward, dollar-settled contract in the same account clients already use for spot and futures," Theodorou said.

By settling premiums, profit and loss, and final settlement in U.S. dollars, Kraken removes the need for traders to manage crypto collateral or handle settlement directly in bitcoin or ether. Theodorou said crypto options activity is still a fraction of what it is in traditional markets, but the gap is closing as professional and institutional capital continues to move into digital assets. "The gap in crypto options isn't demand, it's design," Theodorou said.

Kraken Expands Derivatives Platform With Portfolio Margin and Multi-Currency Collateral

The product includes portfolio margin by default, allowing offsetting positions across spot, futures, and options to reduce collateral requirements. Users can post collateral in more than 30 currencies, a feature that could appeal to international clients managing multi-asset trading accounts. The exchange has built educational tools into the trading interface, covering strategies such as calls, puts, and multi-leg positions.

Theodorou said options are central to how sophisticated investors take positions on price, volatility and time. "Bringing this capability to Kraken Pro continues the build-out of a comprehensive derivatives platform alongside spot and futures, giving clients a single venue to express directional views and manage risk," Theodorou said.

Kraken Plans Public Order Book and Europe Expansion for Options Product

Kraken plans to add a public order book, which would improve price discovery beyond the initial request-for-quote format. The exchange also plans broader geographic availability and support for additional assets. Europe is the next major target, with Theodorou saying Kraken already holds the permissions needed to offer crypto derivatives in the region.
