Japan Records 12-Year High with 5,346 Business Bankruptcies in H1 2026

According to Tokyo Shoko Research, 5,346 Japanese companies with liabilities of 10 million yen or more filed for bankruptcy in the first half of 2026, marking a 12-year high. The figure represents a 7.1% year-on-year increase, with June alone accounting for 1,021 bankruptcies, up 20.4% compared to June 2025, per Japanese public broadcaster NHK and news agency Kyodo News.
