Japan Cabinet Approves Reclassification of 105 Digital Assets as Financial Products on April 10

According to Populus, on April 10, 2026, Japan's Cabinet approved a comprehensive reform package reclassifying 105 digital assets, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, from payment instruments to financial products under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act (FIEA). The change will impose continuous disclosure requirements on issuers comparable to listed stocks, prohibit insider trading, and increase penalties for unlicensed dealers to up to 10 years imprisonment and 10 million yen in fines. The reform is expected to take effect in fiscal 2027.
