HKEX and HKMA Launch Digital Payment Pilot for Post-Market Derivatives Trading

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) launched a pilot program today to introduce digital payment solutions for post-market derivatives trading. The initiative will research the use of digital Hong Kong dollar—a wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) operating 24/7—to settle margin requirements in after-hours trading. The pilot aims to enhance risk management capabilities in the derivatives market outside banking hours while maintaining existing operational procedures.
