Google DeepMind Researcher Alex Turner Resigns Over Unrestricted Pentagon Military AI Contract

According to a lengthy post published recently by Alex Turner, a former Google DeepMind AI safety researcher, he resigned in June following the company's April signing of a military AI contract with the U.S. Department of Defense that he describes as 'unrestricted.' Turner had drafted a 25-page military AI oversight framework and secured support from approximately 250 DeepMind and Google Research employees, proposing safeguards against autonomous weapons and mass surveillance. However, Turner stated that communications with DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis and other senior leaders yielded no substantive progress, and the proposal was never formally addressed by management.

Turner also noted that contract provisions limiting autonomous weapons and surveillance were non-binding in language. He expressed disappointment that prominent AI figures including Google Chief Scientist Jeff Dean and Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio did not take sufficient action to prevent the contract signing, despite earlier public statements opposing lethal autonomous weapons.
