Global Stocks Fall Sharply on Friday Amid Escalating Middle East Tensions

On Friday, July 17, major stock indices globally declined sharply. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 4%, China's Shanghai Composite dropped 3.05%, and the Hang Seng Index slid 1.78%. Nasdaq 100 futures fell 2% in pre-market trading. The selloff coincided with escalating tensions in the Middle East, where U.S. forces conducted airstrikes on Iran for the sixth consecutive night, and Tehran launched missile attacks on Gulf allies. Gold fell below $4,000, while Brent crude oil rose 2%.
